That’s one less concern for Adam Gase.
Sam Darnold is expected to practice on a limited basis on Thursday after having his toenail removed on Tuesday. The second-year quarterback, coming off his “seeing ghosts” performance in Monday night’s ugly loss to the Patriots, wasn’t listed as a practice participant on Wednesday.
Darnold was out on the field, though, and Gase said he was fine and should play Sunday against the Jaguars.
“Unless he [hurts] something, he’ll be all right,” Gase said.
The bigger concern may be Darnold’s mental health after his four-interception nightmare against the Patriots in which he was caught on an ESPN mic saying, “I’m seeing ghosts.”
“He was good. He’s done a good job of moving onto the next one,” Gase said. “He’s done everything mentally to try to make sure he’s good to go. We got a lot of things we want to work on, technique-wise, mechanical-wise, so today will be a good day for us.”
There remains uncertainty about the status of inside linebacker C.J. Mosley, who returned from a groin injury against the Patriots, but clearly wasn’t himself. Jets doctors are doing a “deep dive” on his issues, which may extend past the groin.
“They’re still trying to evaluate,” Gase said. “They’re doing everything they can to get some answers.”
Gase believes the Jets will be able to offer some clarity in the next 24 hours.
Kelechi Osemele, the offensive guard clashing with the Jets over a shoulder injury he believes needs surgery but they do not, raised eyebrows on Wednesday when he told reporters he hadn’t spoken to Gase in weeks. But the Jets coach said that isn’t rare to not speak to an injured player.
“I haven’t seen him. He’s in the training room,” Gase said. “We’re in meetings and things like that. He hasn’t asked to speak to me. He’s injured.”
Osemele said on Wednesday three different doctors believe he needs surgery for a torn labrum. But the team has yet to approve it. They began fining him last week for conduct detrimental to the team after he refused to practice. Osemele has filed a grievance against the Jets in response.
