The Dallas Cowboys could be getting back receiver Michael Gallup this week. His return may also bring back the best part of the Cowboys offense.
If you’ve been watching the last two games the Dallas Cowboys offense hasn’t been the same since they lost receiver Michael Gallup to a knee injury. Teams have been able to shift their focus when defending the passing game to strictly Amari Cooper. The Cowboys were lucky during the Miami Dolphins game due to their lack of talent.
They weren’t lucky when the next week and it showed when the Cowboys played the Saints when Marshon Lattimore kept Cooper in check. The Saints were able to force the receivers like Devin Smith, Tavon Austin, and Cedric Wilson to beat them. As we all know that never happened for the Cowboys.
But now the Cowboys are getting back a big part of their offense with Gallup’s return. Teams won’t be able to focus all of their attention on Cooper with Gallup’s ability to take over a game by himself. The speed he brings to the field and his route running skills are going to put the pressure back on the defense and give quarterback Dak Prescott his second favorite target back.
Gallup will also help the Dallas Cowboys running game and in turn, their play-action passing game as well. His ability to take the top off of defense while force teams to hold that safety back and not stack the box against running backs Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. Both should see a lot more running lanes to take advantage of to pick up bigger chunks of yards.
When Elliott and Pollard are able to do that and draw the linebackers and safeties in to stop the running game then Gallup’s speed and Cooper’s route running will make defenses pay in the play-action passing game. Gallup’s return is coming at the right time with the Cowboys facing off against two high powered offenses over the next three weeks in the Packers and Eagles.
