Jets' Sam Darnold (mono) still out for Week 5 vs....

The Jets will be missing starting quarterback Sam Darnold again on Sunday when they face the Eagles.

Darnold was ruled out by the doctors on Thursday night after further testing to see if his body had fully recovered from mononucleosis. The tests did not come back the way the Jets were hoping and now Luke Falk will be under center Sunday in Philadelphia.

“I know Sam’s disappointed, but we’re able to adjust and work quickly,” coach Adam Gase said. “Our guys have done a good job with any kind of changes we’ve had to make.”

The Jets were hopeful this week that Darnold would be able to return after missing the last two games. But he was not cleared for contact earlier in the week and then his most recent tests showed he still is unable to play. Mono causes the spleen to enlarge and Darnold would have been at risk if he was hit the wrong way of having the spleen rupture, which can lead to death.

“I felt bad for him,” Gase said. “When we told him, the first thing he says is, ‘I feel like I’m letting the other guys down.’ It’s not about him. He tried to do everything he could. He did everything he was asked to do. He did everything the doctors told him to do. It just didn’t work out for him.”

Initially the Jets were going to wait until Friday to test Darnold, but the doctors suggested moving the tests up to Thursday night.

The Jets signed David Fales to serve as Falk’s backup Sunday. Fales was the backup against the Patriots two weeks ago, but was released last week. He has been with Gase in Miami and knows the offense.

Darnold has gotten the bulk of the first-team reps this week in practice, but Gase said Falk has gotten some first-team reps and has done a lot of work with the scout team.

“We were ready for either way,” Gase said. “We didn’t know. Even when we started it, we didn’t know. We were just trying to make sure than anything that we did was the right thing as far as play calls and things like that to make sure we didn’t put him in a bad spot if they cleared him.”
