Evan Engram back on the field

Evan Engram back on the field

The New York Giants were without several key players against the New England Patriots last Thursday night, including running backs Saquon Barkley (ankle) and Wayne Gallman (concussion), tight end Evan Engram (knee) and wide receiver Sterling Shepard (concussion).

Expectations were that the Giants would get at least two of those players back ahead of a Week 7 game against the Arizona Cardinals, but early indications are that they might get all four back.

As the team returned to East Rutherford for practice on Monday, so to did Barkley, Gallman, Shepard and Engram.

All four players were on the field stretching and doing individual work during the portion of practice that was open to the media, and only Gallman was wearing a yellow non-contact jersey. That bodes well for each player’s potential availability come Sunday, although head coach Pat Shurmur would not commit to any of them playing.

Shurmur indicated that while Shepard has made some progress, he remains in concussion protocol. He also seemed to imply that Gallman is as well.

On the downside of things, sophomore cornerback Sam Beal, who is on injured reserve as the result of a hamstring injury, was not seen participating with the team even though Monday represented the first day he could return to the field. Shurmur said he should practice on Wednesday.

Because the official injury report won’t come out until mid-week, it’s unclear what the participation level was for each player, but it’s likely both Shepard and Gallman would have been DNP, while Barkley and Engram were limited.

We’ll know more come Wednesday.
