At 2-0 after two strong victories over NFC East rivals, are the Dallas Cowboys the best team in the NFC through the first two weeks of the 2019 NFL season?
We might be only entering Week 3 of the 2019 NFL season, but the Dallas Cowboys have looked incredible. Despite a noisy offseason headlined by contract talks and running back Ezekiel Elliott’s holdout for a new deal, the Cowboys are 2-0 and certainly have the look of a playoff-caliber team. But are they the best team in the NFC?
On this week’s episode of Stacking the Box, FanSided‘s Matt Verderame and Josh Hill, along with former NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz discussed how impressive the Cowboys’ start to 2019 has been and if they are indeed the best team in the NFC (32:26).
Schwartz is all-in on the Cowboys this year. They were his pick to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LIV down in Miami this February. His high opinion of America’s Team hasn’t changed, although they haven’t played the toughest schedule yet. It’s not like the New York Giants or the Washington Redskins are exactly world-beaters, to begin with anyway.
Verderame says he initially picked the Cowboys’ archrivals in the Philadelphia Eagles to come out of the NFC this year, but through the first two weeks, he has Dallas atop the NFC in his weekly power rankings. He likes the team’s balance and defensive prowess. That being said, he does have concerns about head coach Jason Garrett come playoff time.
Garrett is more of a CEO head coach than anything. Former Cowboys quarterback Kellen Moore is the new offensive coordinator, while Rod Marinelli and Kris Richard handle this strong Dallas defense.
However, the best coaches rise to the occasion in the postseason and that’ll be something Garrett will have to do if the Cowboys want to make the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1995 campaign.
With the toothless Miami Dolphins and the New Orleans Saints without Drews Brees next up on the schedule, the Cowboys have to love their chances about starting the year out 4-0. Their first real big test will be in Week 5 when they host the Green Bay Packers on FOX’s America’s Game of the Week.
Overall, Dallas looks to be in terrific shape to start the year. That being said, it’s very hard to win the season this early, but you can most certainly lose it. With two wins in their pocket and presumably more coming, anything short of a 10-6 campaign for America’s Team would be a massive disappointment.
Other topics discussed on this week’s episode of Stacking the Box include:
- Is starting Daniel Jones the right decision for the New York Giants? (0:55)
- Can Mason Rudolph lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to the playoffs? (6:46)
- Can the Saints win 10 games, even without Brees? (27:56)
- Are the 2019 Dolphins the worst team in NFL history? (38:06)
All this and more!
